I actually had started this book a while ago. But never finished but I FINALLY DID! This book was one of the best books I've read.
Annette Goode, one of the main charaters in the book, is a young African American girl growing up in Florida in the 1950's. Annette's father leaves the family for another woman, his crazy acts sparks her mother's decision to leave Florida for Richland, Ohio. In Richland, Mrs. Goode feels that she can make a better life for herself and her child. To make money for the family, Mrs. Goode begins to work as a house keeper and also begins to live with the family, a one legged man named Mr. Boatwright. Mr. Boatwright begins to molest Annette, threatening Annette in so many different ways. Although Annette insist that he stops molesting her, Mr. Boatwright threatens her with a gun and warns her that he knows how to use it. Annette's life changes forever when she makes friends with her neighbour. Her name is Rhonda Nelson. And as the book describes her, she is drop dead gorgeouse. Annette, had always been told she was ugly and fat, and she couldnt belive that someone like Rhonda wanted to become friends with her. Before long Rhoda and Annette are inseparable. When Annette finally tells Rhoda about Mr. Boatwright's molestation, Rhoda takes matters into her own hands.
In addittion to that, this sudden twist in the book suprises me. One ordinary day Mrs. Goode comes upon this anonymous letter in the mail. And this is just the beggining of this "anonymous" persons crazy acts. There are phone calls, packages, and letters. The threats started to get major. When it starts involving her daughter. Annette realizes that this situation isn't anything to play with. To comfort her there's Rhonda and Rhonda's teenage daughter Jade. This person wants to destroy everything Annette has built up too. From her tough childhood she had overcame. Everything was just falling apart.
Good Mia. Remember to underline book titles so the title is clear to the reader.
